CALGARY - A law professor says remarks by a Calgary judge during a sexual-assault trial were insensitive and inappropriate but she believes he has been educated on the issue.

Brenda Cossman from the University of Toronto worked with Justice Robin Camp after the trial in which he asked the complainant if she couldn't have kept her "knees together."

The Alberta Court of Appeal overturned his acquittal of the suspect and ordered a new trial.

Camp is appearing before a Canadian Judicial Council committee which is to recommend whether he should be removed from the bench.

Cossman says she doesn't defend Camp's comments, but believes his insensitivity was due to a lack of education about sexual assaults and a history of discrimination against female complainants.

She says Camp knows he made some "terrible mistakes" and is remorseful.
