A Halifax woman has been invited to visit Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall in England after her baked goods caught the attention of the royal couple during their recent trip to Canada.
Ingrid Dunsworth, known locally as “The Cake Lady,” is preparing for her once-in-a-lifetime trip to Britain, where she’ll visit Highgrove, the country home of the heir to the British throne.
Dunsworth first met Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, when the royal couple made a stop at the Seaport Farmer’s Market in Halifax. It was one of their many appearances during a four-day royal tour that also included visits to P.E.I. and Manitoba.
It seems Dunsworth and her baked goods left quite an impression on the prince and his wife.
“They literally stopped, and I think they were very touched, and looked, and told me they would like to have something sent to the U.K.,” Dunsworth told CTV News.
Sometime after the royal tour, Dunsworth sent the couple a package of baked goods, along with a letter explaining that her other passion is gardening.
To Dunsworth’s delight, she received a message back from the Prince of Wales.
“He told me how pleased and touched they both were, and they would like me very much to come to see his gardens in Highgrove,” Dunsworth said.
Dunsworth’s family and customers couldn’t be happier for her, and they’re not surprised by the royal endorsement. Her goodies are so popular, she’s had to steadily increase her inventory.
Customer Linda Ripley says her husband loves Dunsworth’s chocolate chips cookies.
“And she makes pumpkin cookies in the fall and they’re the best,” Ripley said.
Dunsworth’s husband Bob says he’s proud of his wife and the high-profile attention her baking skills are attracting.
“If you get invited, you should do it,” he said. “It’s one of those experiences in life that maybe it only comes once in your life.”
