MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- An Ontario provincial police officer who was struck and dragged by a car says he is on the road to recovery.

OPP Const. Patrick Chatelain said in a statement Tuesday that he is grateful for the care he received from paramedics and looks forward to getting back to work once he's healed.

He described the Monday morning incident as "a truly terrifying event."

Police say Chatelain was conducting a traffic stop in Mississauga, Ont., shortly before 9 a.m. when the driver tried to flee.

They say a 25-year-old Brampton, Ont., man has been charged with obstructing a peace officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing injury, criminal negligence and failing to remain at the scene.

Peel police initially said the officer's injuries were considered life-threatening, but his condition improved and he was recovering at home.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in a tweet that Chatelain -- a four-year veteran of the Port Credit detachment -- was expected to make a full recovery.
