Defence Department names master seaman who died in industrial accident in B.C.

ESQUIMALT, B.C. -- The Department of National Defence has released the name of a master seaman who died following a serious industrial accident near Victoria.

Guillermo Castellon died Friday, four days after he was injured at 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron.

The department has not released details about what happened as it conducts an investigation and says a board of inquiry will be convened.

Read-Admiral Art McDonald, the commander of Maritime Forces Pacific, says Castellon's wife was at his side when he died.

McDonald says 50-year-old Castellon was known as Will to his friends and colleagues and was an extremely likable guy who loved to chat.

He says Castellon immigrated from Honduras and served Canada for 22 years in the army reserve, the naval reserve and as a member of the regular force.

In a statement provided by the department, Castellon's wife says her husband was extremely rule oriented and ensured his work and the work of his subordinates was performed efficiently.

"Work safety was one of his main priorities," his wife said in the statement, which did not include her name.

"He always made sure everyone was safe before performing a dangerous task of operation. This quality was also reflected in his personal life. He constantly watched over me, regardless of the distance between Montreal and Victoria."

The Royal Canadian Air Force website says 443 squadron has six CH-124 Sea King helicopters that support the navy's Pacific fleet, based in Esquimalt.

The helicopters are used to combat drug, fisheries and environmental violations in Canadian waters and have also been employed internationally for peacekeeping, humanitarian and naval operations.
