Nearly three decades after it was written, Foo Fighters’ “Everlong” is proving that a rock song can outlast the era that produced it. The 1997 hit has climbed back to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hard Rock Streaming chart for the week of Oct. 31, bringing renewed attention to one of the band’s most enduring songs. Released as the second single from the group’s second studio album, The Colour and the Shape, “Everlong” has remained a fixture in Foo Fighters’ catalogue, connecting with longtime fans while continuing to reach new listeners. A song born during a difficult period The track’s origins are closely tied to frontman Dave Grohl’s personal life. According to music publication Louder, Grohl began developing the song in late 1996 while staying at a friend’s home in Virginia during the breakdown of his marriage to Jennifer Youngblood. What began as an acoustic guitar idea reportedly took about 45 minutes to put together. Grohl drew inspiration from his relationship with Louise Post, frontwoman of alternative rock band Veruca Salt, with the song capturing the intensity of romantic connection. The track’s emotional themes, paired with its driving guitars and distinctive vocals, helped establish it as one of the defining songs in Foo Fighters’ catalogue. A lasting legacy Grohl initially had reservations about the song, reportedly wondering whether its sound resembled the work of Sonic Youth. He played a demo for the band’s Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon, who encouraged him to include it on the album, Louder reported. That decision helped bring the song to a wider audience and cement its place in the band’s history.
