Two youths were hurt, one seriously, in a crash involving an e-bike in Medicine Hat on the weekend, authorities say. The Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS) responded to a crash between a vehicle and an e-bike at Cameron Road and Ross Glen Way S.E. at 12:55 p.m. on July 4. “Upon arrival, emergency responders located two youths who had sustained injuries as a result of the collision,” MHPS said in a statement on Facebook. “Both were transported to hospital for treatment. One of the youths was subsequently transferred to a Calgary hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.” Police say the driver of the vehicle was not hurt. The MHPS investigation found the driver had come to a full stop at a posted sign and was turning right when the e-bike, carrying the two youths, came into the intersection from the sidewalk “at a high rate of speed.” The bike ended up in the vehicle’s path. Neither youth was wearing a helmet and that contributed to the severity of their injuries, MHPS said. According to provincial regulations, all riders and passengers of e-bikes must wear an approved helmet, regardless of their age. “Helmets have been proven to significantly reduce the risk of serious head injuries and can play a critical role in preventing life-altering injuries during a collision. MHPS encourages all cyclists and e-bike riders to wear an approved helmet every time they ride and to ensure their helmet is properly fitted and in good condition,” police said. No charges are expected to be laid.
