Wednesday’s high of 5 C will be the coldest daytime high for the next 10 days

Calgary will see a high of 5 C on Wednesday. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

A series of high-pressure systems and a well-placed trough to the east will allow warmer air to continue to flow into southern Alberta.

More melting will occur over the next week as daytime highs in Calgary range from 5 C on Wednesday to 12 C at the end of next week.

A persistent freeze-thaw cycle will remain, however pooled water is not going to form the same thick layer of ice that is common with these patterns in January. That’s because the overnight lows will be much warmer than average.

There will still be select slippery areas, including side streets, back alleys, locations under downspouts and/or at the base of hills – but with the elevated temperatures on both ends of the diurnal cycle - the ice will not form as strong of a bond and will melt quickly during the day.

Slushy conditions will continue on side streets, pathways, parking lots or any areas where there is still measurable snow on the ground, but over the next week this will continue to improve.

Light and mixed precipitation fell early Wednesday along the foothills and east toward the QEII corridor and Highway 2 South.

Wednesday will be cloudier across the region compared to Tuesday, and it will also be slightly windier in Calgary with sustained wind speeds of 15 to 20 km/h out of the west.
