The federal government is investing millions of dollars to protect Banff National Park.

Animal underpasses are some of the things that will be upgraded in Banff National Park.

More than $39 million in federal money will go to Banff National Park for several projects, including a plan to recover tree species that are at risk.

Funding will go to the recovery of the Whitebark and Limber pine and make sure that they are perpetuated throughout their natural range.

The money will also support the Mountain Park Fire Restoration Project to improve the ecological integrity of the forest ecosystem through the use of controlled burns. These burns mimic natural fires that would renew and refresh the forest and kill pests.

Three animal underpasses on the Trans-Canada Highway will be rehabilitated to make them stronger and safer for animals to use, and some re-paving of the highway will be done.

Campgrounds and day-use areas in Lake Louise, Bow Lake and Peyto Lake Bow Summit will be upgraded to improve visitor experience and to make them more ecologically sound.

The Forty Mile Creek Landfill will be rehabilitated to protect ground and surface water systems.

Experiential programs will be put in place to give visitors an opportunity to learn and understand first-hand about Métis peoples and their traditional trades.

Banff National Park welcomes about 3.8 million visitors per year, making it the single most popular national park in Canada.
