Suspected carbon monoxide leak at Piikani Nation arena forces evacuation of building

Piikani Nation Hockey Arena was evacuated early Wednesday morning after a number of people fell ill.

An investigation is underway after an apparent carbon monoxide leak Wednesday at Piikani Nation Hockey Arena.

At around 10 a.m,, Piikani Nation officials were made aware that people using the hockey arena were feeling sick.

They said that it was quickly determined that the cause was unusual carbon monoxide buildup inside the arena.

The building was evacuated. EMS attended the scene and administered aid. Piikani officials said in a release that they understood that some people may have required hospitalization.

Piikani officials called for a full review of mechanical operations at the arena and said they will review prevention protocols going forward.
