Stair climbers give a show of strength in third annual fundraiser to support military families at McHugh Bluffs

Around 150 people climbed the stairs at McHugh Bluff Saturday to raise funds to support military families.

Climbing the stairs at McHugh Bluffs was representative of the challenges military families face when they move to a new community.

Saturday was the third Stairs of Strength fundraiser, which raised funds for the Calgary Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC).

Organizers say it’s also a show of solidarity with military and veteran families to ensure they have access to the connection support and resources they deserve.

“The money goes to programming and services for military and veteran families,“ said Barbara Pohl, executive director of the Calgary Military Resources Centre. ”It could be things from workshops, mental health supports, community engagement opportunities for families who might not know another military family, because people are so spread out here."

Around 150 people signed up to climb the stairs with organizers hoping to raise around $15,000.

“I’ve been in the army 27 years now,” said Lt.-Col. Sandy Cooper, the deputy commander of the Third Canadian Division Support Group. “I think with that, I’ve moved seven times, so I’m one of the lucky ones.

“My kids have only moved four or five times, and you know the MFRC is a place where, when you show up, you’re immediately welcome to your new city or garrison, and they provide programming that makes especially the kids feel like they’re part of something big – maybe makes them feel a little special with some of the cool events they can put on."

Cooper climbed the stairs wearing a 55-lb. backpack, which matches what Canadian soldiers stationed around the world wear when they’re on a mission.
