The Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation in Lethbridge is celebrating a major gift from a local company in support of the Bringing Hearts Home campaign. Serfas Farms donated $1 million toward the cardiac campaign Monday morning. The Serfas family began farming in the 1950s and has built its reputation on hard work, innovation, stewardship and a belief that lasting success comes from investing in people. The third-generation farming business has donated the money to be used toward the future centre of excellence, helping to bring cardiac care to southern Alberta. The family says the donation is one way of leaving their legacy in the community. “I don’t want people to focus so much on the dollar amount,” said Kevin Serfas. “I think what’s important is the why and having the ability to build something in Lethbridge that can save lives and help keep people from having to go to Calgary. “That’s very important to us.” “It also sends a very strong signal to decision-makers that this is what the community believes in,” said Dr. Sayeh Zielke, Southern Alberta Cardiac Sciences Advisory Cabinet chair. “This is what the community is getting behind, and it helps us really accelerate the entire project timeline. “So, we are very grateful for every single dollar received.” Once built, the cardiac centre will expand access to specialized services and help more patients receive timely care closer to home.
