A Calgary non-profit organization set up a giant board game downtown on Thursday to celebrate 30 years in operation. Safe Haven Foundation, which provides long-term housing and support for homeless and at-risk teenage girls, launched in 1996. On Thursday, the group invited people to participate in a large Monopoly-inspired game inside Brookfield Place in the 200 block of Sixth Avenue S.W. The interactive game let participants play their way through moments from Safe Haven’s 30-year history while learning more about the organization’s work. Safe Haven CEO Krystyna Lloyd says the game was a special way of showcasing the businesses and individuals who have supported the charity through the years. “We provide homes, not houses – and we provide bedrooms not beds,” Lloyd explained. “We offer two streams of support. So, the first is Haven’s Way, a six-bedroom home where girls and young women who have been at risk of or are in the early stages of experiencing homelessness are welcome home. “The next step is Haven’s Harbour; it’s an independent living program and building where they start to pay affordable rent, they put those life skills to the test, but they still have access to community and coaching that really sets them up for success.” Participants playing the giant board game on Thursday had a chance to win tickets to Safe Haven’s upcoming 30th anniversary gala, Peals and Tides.
