With seeding season right around the corner, the RCMP are reminding farmers to be safe when at railway crossings. With more farm equipment and large commercial vehicles set to be on the road, Mounties and CN Rail police are advising drivers to be extra cautious around railway crossings. Along with larger vehicles, police say spring weather like rain and fog can cause challenges on the roads. Police say when you come to a railway crossing, look both ways and proceed when it’s safe—and never stop on train tracks. “The train will always win, so don’t engage in risky behaviours. All drivers should be exercising extreme care when crossing through intersections,” said Staff Sgt. Mark Wielgosz with the Strathmore RCMP. “And don’t let that complacency set in, especially if you’re familiar with the area. “Drive safe, look both ways and if you’re going to cross a railway crossing, make sure you do so safely, legally and clear that intersection as quickly as possible.” “Our desire for safety is rooted in the motorists’ safety but also the safety and well-being of our railway employees that play a critical role in moving goods and services across this province,” said Insp. Brian Jones with the CN Police Service. The RCMP say 37 collisions happened at train crossings last year. Two people were killed and six people were seriously injured.
