Public input sought over Christine Meikle School

Students at Christine Meikle School in Bridgeland will soon attend a new school in Varsity. There are no plans for the old building at this time.

The Calgary Board of Education says it will be speaking with residents in Bridgeland about what they want the association and the city to do with the old Christine Meikle School.

The CBE announced in March 2015 that they were moving ahead with a plan to move the special needs school from the community to a new location in Varsity.

Students at the school are expected to make the shift in January.

The CBE held a meeting in Bridgeland on Wednesday night to inform residents about the move, letting them know the aging building will soon be empty.

Representatives felt the information session was necessary.

“We believe that part of our community engagement and being good neighbours is informing the community when there are any changes to existing programming in our schools,” said Carrie Edwards with the Calgary Board of Education.

Officials from the City of Calgary, who also attended the meeting, say there are no plans for the site so far.

“We will be engaging the community in terms of advancing consideration. At this point, it’s a blank slate. We have no previous notions of future development at this point,” said Doug Cassidy with the City of Calgary.

The city will now evaluate what to do with the building.

As for the land itself, it’s zoned for multi-family development.
