Province destroys 700,000 remaining bottles of children’s pain and fever medicine

The Alberta government has destroyed the remaining 700,000 bottles of children's pain and fever medication it ordered from Turkey.

The province says it has now destroyed the remainder of the children’s pain and fever medicine it ordered from Turkey.

In 2022, the Alberta government ordered the liquid acetaminophen because of a shortage of children’s pain medicine.

But by the time it arrived, the shortage was over.

It was also pulled from neonatal intensive care units because it was clogging feeding tubes.

The province says half of its remaining 1.4 million bottles were donated.

But the rest have now been destroyed because they were set to expire.

The opposition calls the whole process a waste of public money, saying it cost $70 million to order the medicine and $700,000 more to destroy what was left.
