Mounties look to Canadian youth to name next batch of police puppies

Kids across Canada are encouraged to pitch their very best police dog names starting with “B.”

Thirteen German Shepherd puppies at the RCMP’s Police Dog Service Training Centre in Innisfail, Alta., will be given the top youth-submitted monikers.

In a news release, Mounties asked children to “be original and imaginative in finding names that will serve these puppies well in their careers.”

“When thinking of names, it is important to keep in mind that these are working police dogs, not pets,” Thursday’s release said.

Centre staff will choose from the entries.

If a chosen name is submitted multiple times, there will be a draw to determine which submission wins.

Each province and territory will be represented among the winning submissions.

Names not chosen could be considered for puppies born later.

“The 13 whose names are selected will each receive a laminated, 8×10-inch photo of the pup they name, a plush dog named Justice and an RCMP water bottle,” Mounties said.

Entries are to be submitted online through the RCMP’s website.

Entries must be one name (male or female), starting with “B,” consisting of no more than two syllables and nine letters.

Entrants must be between 4 and 14 years old and reside in Canada.

The deadline is March 26, 2026, with the winners announced in late April.

Mounties were looking for names starting with “A” last year:

• Maxime Bellencourt from Yukon came up with Ace;
• Rachael Marche from Newfoundland and Labrador offered Argo;
• Emmett Campbell from Prince Edward Island submitted Arctic;
• Madison Zamrykut from Manitoba put up Anouk;
• Chance Jerome from Alberta gave Action;
• Samuel Bailey from Quebec thought of Agent;
• Brianne Bell from Saskatchewan went with Atim;
• Quentin Qammaniq from Nunavut chose Ash;
• Nora Boken from the Northwest Territories wrote in August;
• Elisa Zirtilides from British Columbia provided Anchor;
• Duncan Hansford from Nova Scotia suggested Alfie;
• Denny Dewar from Ontario tossed in Adler; and
• Paisley Leger from New Brunswick pitched Addy.
