Banff’s Mount Norquay is opening ahead of schedule this season, thanks in part to fresh snowfall. The hill was originally going to open on Saturday, Nov. 7, but announced Tuesday that it will welcome skiers and snowboarders on Friday instead. Opening day will feature the Cascade Chair, Sundance Learning Area and a small terrain park, with rentals and lessons also available. “We’re especially excited to introduce our expanded beginner area, giving new skiers and riders more space to learn, practice and build confidence on snow,” said a news release. “Over the last season, we’ve tripled our learning space so whether you’re making your first turns or introducing your family to skiing or snowboarding, there’s even more room to get started at Norquay.” All four ski hills in the Bow Valley — Norquay included — have changed their operating hours because of Alberta’s move to permanent daylight time. Norquay, Lake Louise, Sunshine Village and Nakiska will all start their ski lifts at 9:30 a.m. Last season, the hills started their lifts at 9 a.m. The move is pivotal in helping mountain operations teams prepare the hills for visitors — something that’s hard to do in the dark. Norquay, Lake Louise and Sunshine and will remain open until 4:30 p.m. Nakiska will close earlier than the rest, at 4 p.m. Sunshine will also open to the public on Friday. Lake Louise opened for the season on Sunday, five days earlier than anticipated. Nakiska will host its first preview weekend on Nov. 7 to 11, with preview weekends following throughout the month and full daily operations set to begin Nov. 28.
