More companies dropping taxi fares

A price war is spreading through the taxi industry in Calgary, with Mayfair the latest company to drop its rates.

Mayfair has announced it will reduce its fares by 15% starting on Monday, April 11, 2016, though it will take about 2 weeks to change the meters in every cab. Mayfair is also reducing the weekly fees drivers have to pay the company.

Checker and Delta are also reducing fares by 15%, and Associated is reducing theirs by 12%. United Cabs has not made an announcement yet.

A new bylaw took effect this month that allows Calgary cab companies to reduce rates for the first time ever.

The bylaw changes were aimed at making it easier for ride-sharing companies like Uber to set up here, but Uber says the rules are still too strict.
