A Calgary brewery is honouring an important milestone for a Royal Canadian Navy vessel named after the city. Tool Shed Brewing’s new Pilsner pays tribute to the HMCS Calgary, which was commissioned back in 1995. The founder of Tool Shed says it’s special to be able to pay tribute to a vessel named after Calgary. “I wasn’t entirely convinced that we would be able to get a project like this across the goal line with the Canadian Department of National Defence allowing a brewery to have a licensed brand of beer utilizing the HMCS Calgary, and, of course, it did get across the goal line, so it’s an incredibly special honour for us,” Graham Sherman, the president of Tool Shed Brewing, said. The Halifax-class frigate became the first Canadian vessel to circumnavigate the globe and has served in missions spanning from the Persian Gulf to the Pacific. All proceeds from the beer will be donated to The Poppy Fund to support veterans and their families.
