Fire in Calgary high-rise displaces 2 families

Two families were displaced by a fire broke out inside a southwest Calgary condo building Tuesday morning.

At about 2 a.m., the Calgary Fire Department was called to 11 Street and 11 Avenue S.W. because of a blaze on a 23rd floor balcony.

The flames spread into the unit, but the building’s sprinkler system helped control it.

Officials say about 100 people were forced out of their homes because of the incident, but most have been allowed to return.

The CFD say the unit closest to the blaze sustained fire and smoke damage, while the unit below it had a significant amount of water damage.

The occupants of both of those units were not allowed to return.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
