Everything for sale at this upcoming Calgary art show is less than $200

Art Spot Calgary is hosting its annual show featuring the work of 50 local artists, and all the pieces are $200 or less.

An upcoming art show in Calgary will feature projects from more than 50 local artists – and all of it will be for sale for less than $200.

Art Spot Calgary’s aptly titled Under $200 Art Show is a chance for people to pick new pieces for their art collections and for artists to clear out their inventories.

“Our goal with a show like this is to get original art into the hands of collectors, because we know that original art can be very inaccessible for people,” said Chantal Gagnon, one of the event organizers. “And also, to help local artists sell their art and get art out of their homes.”

Gagnon says the sale has been running for 18 years.

It used to be that all pieces were for sale for less than $100, but last year that was bumped up to $200.

The show features a wide range of mediums including painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, mixed media and jewelry.

“It’s incredible what you can get here for $200,” Gagnon said. “A lot of these pieces are worth thousands of dollars for sure, and its hundreds of hours of work; it’s incredible.”

Artist Viviana Pacheco says many of her larger paintings are regularly priced close to $600, but for the show they’re cut to $200.

“Every time somebody buys something – even if it’s just a print – it’s like a reaffirmation that I’m on the right path for my work,” she said.

Artist Tracy Lapointe says her style has changed many times over the years, and the sale is an opportunity for her to sell her inventory so she can start new projects.

“The people that come out to the show – it’s nice when you’re volunteering – you can stand back and you watch them look at your art and really be impressed,” she said.

Artist Christian Frederiksen says it’s inspiring to see the large following Art Spot Calgary has.

“The community of artists and other people here that they have built is really great,” Frederiksen said. “All of us artists, we volunteer to contribute to the show, and I think that builds a really good sense of ownership.”

The Under $200 Art Show will run from Oct. 16 to 19 at 1029 10 Ave. S.W.
