Cold warnings issued for 10 of 13 provinces and territories

A large polar air mass situated over central Canada has prompted yellow and/or orange cold warnings in every Canadian province and territory – except British Columbia, the Yukon, and Nunavut.

Wind chill values between -40 to -50 are expected to continue through Friday with warmer weather gradually moving in over the weekend.

In Alberta, yellow cold warnings were expanded to cover the entire eastern border, including Medicine Hat and Lloydminster.

Calgary is expecting a daytime high of -12 C Friday with wind chill values in the -27 range early in the day.

More light and scattered flurries are possible in central Alberta Friday afternoon and evening with some of that snow edging into Calgary. More persistent snow is likely on Saturday with the heaviest accumulations along the foothills. Calgary is forecast to see one to three centimetres Saturday.

A Pacific ridge of high pressure will start to edge over the Rockies by the end of the weekend, moderating daytime highs, and by early next week Calgary is expecting temperatures to sit both above seasonal and above freezing for most of the week.

The normal range of temperatures in Calgary this time of year is -3 C for a high and -15 C for a low.
