The City of Calgary is issuing a fire advisory. No restrictions were put in place, but a Thursday media release from the city asks Calgarians and visitors to use extra caution when using open flames or any solid-fuelled appliance such as fire pits, barbeques and campfires. “Keep a water source near every fire,” the city said, “and fully extinguish fires after use.” “We ask that everyone be vigilant when disposing of smoking materials, ensure that all open fires are supervised and keep fire pits a minimum of three metres from property lines and combustible materials”, said fire marshal Glenn Baxter. “We will continue to monitor conditions and will update the fire danger rating as needed.” The advisory comes the same day as fire bans were issued in Banff, Yoho and Kootenay National Parks. The city has three levels of fire restrictions: advisory, restrictions and bans. Fire advisories are the lowest level of risk. “A fire advisory informs citizens of conditions that pose a moderate fire risk and encourages them to take additional precautions,” the city says on its website. “It may be issued for short-term conditions such as major wind events and hot temperatures.” For more information about provincial fire bans, go here.
