Hard to believe we are in the final week of July already and it’s shaping up to be a hot one. Today, Calgary will experience mainly sunny conditions with a high of 28C. We will continue to have daytime highs in the upper 20s or low 30s throughout the week, but overnight lows may be cool enough to keep the city outside of heat warning criteria. Yellow-level heat warnings remain in place just south and east of Calgary as areas like Lethbridge and Medicine Hat will hit highs in the low thirties throughout the week. It doesn’t appear any severe storm weather is in store for southern Alberta, but the north central part of the province including Edmonton could see more thunderstorms roll through on Tuesday. Wildfire smoke appears to be more of a concern for the Calgary area this week. While today’s air quality should be in the low-risk zone, models are showing smoke from fires burning stateside could move back into southern Alberta throughout Monday and into Tuesday pushing the air quality health index into the moderate risk criteria. We see a dip in temperatures on the 10-day trend during the August long weekend which may be an indicator of our next rain event, though we are a bit far out still to have a high degree of confidence. Make sure to take proper health and safety precautions in the heat and to be fire smart with the drying conditions.
