Calgary Wild FC got off to the worst possible start this season. In 14 games, they had just two draws. But since then, the Wild have gone on a bit of a run with two wins and two draws in their past four games. Part of the reason for the turnaround was the hiring of Leah Blayney as their new head coach. Blayney’s currently on personal leave but is expected back soon. Until she gets back, Kory Babington has taken over and is happy the team is having some success. “There’s a good vibe amongst the group,” said Babington. “They’ve got some excellent players here, and we’ve added some top quality as well. We’re moving in the right direction, and the results show that and definitely the feeling in camp is good.” Playoffs a long shot With just seven games left in the regular season, making the playoffs will be a tall order for the Wild. Defender Grace Stordy has been with the club from Day 1 and feels the Wild are building something special for the future. ‘I think everything that is happening right now is going to be huge for this club and for this city,” said Stordy. “I think we have all the pieces we need. They came in a little bit later this year, but we have all the pieces now and I’m really excited to see how it plays out the next few years.” New players The new players the Wild signed include midfielder Taylor Otto and defenders Frédérique St-Jean and Madison Pogarch. The latest signing was American midfielder Josie Aulicino. She says she’s been impressed with what she’s seen in her short time here. “I think all of the girls have the drive to win, and I think we’re all in an environment where we’re able to push each other,” said Aulicino, who was playing in Australia. “Obviously, the coaching staff is able to help with that and the new players are driving up the energy and I think the existing players had a great foundation and they’re just helping drive everyone and keep going.” Big test On Sunday, the Wild will try to extend their unbeaten streak in league play to five games. Stordy knows it won’t be easy. They’ll have to try to knock off Toronto AFC for the first time this season. “I think just bringing it to them the way they usually bring it to us because I don’t think we’ve really come off strong to start our Toronto games,” said Stordy. Kickoff for Sunday’s match in Toronto will be a little after noon MST.
