Calgary to see plenty of sunshine this week with highs around 7 C

Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

Temperatures will start to moderate for central Canada after Monday as the upper pattern resets following a couple of weeks of large undulations in the jet stream.

When those large waves driven by strong high- and low-pressure systems (known as Rossby waves) form over North America, they are often associated with significant weather and typically produce highly variable conditions across the country.

Over the past week, western Canada was setting new records for high temperatures, while eastern and central Canada dealt with unusually cold temperatures and relentless snow.

A distinct west-to east pattern is setting up across the country, and with that zonal flow, temperatures and conditions will be more consistent.

Calgary is expecting daytime highs around 7 C this week, with more sunshine than cloud.

Areas east of Alberta will enjoy more seasonal temperatures, with southern Ontario expecting highs around the freezing mark for most of this week.

The next chance of precipitation in Calgary will be at the end of the weekend: about a 30 per cent chance of light and mixed precipitation on Sunday.

Overnight lows will remain above seasonal for that same period, ranging from -2 to -6 C, compared to the normal low of -13 C.
