Calgary man killed in southern Alberta shooting

A Calgary man is dead and another is in hospital after a weekend shooting jolted residents out of bed in the southern Alberta town of Raymond.

A Calgary man was killed in a shooting in southern Alberta on Saturday.

Mounties received reports of people yelling and an estimated 20 shots fired in the town of Raymond at 2:18 a.m.

RCMP officers from Raymond, Coaldale, Picture Butte and Cardston responded, along with police officers from Lethbridge.

The shooting killed a 22-year-old man from Calgary. His name hasn’t been released.

That same day, a 26-year-old Calgary man visited the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge to be treated for a gunshot injury.

RCMP are investigating if he was connected to the Raymond incident.

Raymond Mayor Bryce Coppieters says he was shocked to learn about the fatal shooting.

“This isn’t something that happens every day,” he said. “I’ve been involved with town council for nine years as councillor and now mayor, and this is the first time we’ve had something like this take place.”

Mounties said in a Monday news release the shooting was “targeted and isolated.”
