Calgary’s Iranian community celebrated the fall this weekend. Mehregan is an ancient Persian festival dedicated to light, friendship, love and the harvest. The Marda Loop Community Association was alive with musical performances and Persian arts and crafts Saturday. Organizers said it was important to invite all Calgarians to create an atmosphere of understanding and tolerance. “I believe having these sorts of events are way more important to the non-Iranian community than us,” said Vahid Mesgarzadeh, the founder of the Calgary Iranian Community Association, “because Iranians know their own culture. “They may come just to celebrate it,” he added. “But we like to spread this culture throughout the other communities.” Roughly 3,900 Iranian-Canadians live in Calgary.
