Calgary CIBC Run for the Cure raises over $1M

Thousands of Calgarians raised more than $1M for cancer awareness and research

Calgarians raised $1,050,000 dollars for the 34th annual Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure on Sunday, October 5.

Over 5,000 runners took part in the run at Southcentre Mall.

“This event is just so hopeful. It’s so inspirational. It tells people that they’re not alone,” said Calgary run director, Kirsty McGowan.

“It also fundraises for vital research and supports, for people living with breast cancer and helps us create a future where, our daughters, and our daughters’ daughters don’t have to live in fear of breast cancer,” said McGowan.

It’s estimated over $18M was raised in 2025, from 53 runs across Canada.

Shelley Weimer was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 and has been volunteering at the run for three years.

“It was always my goal to give back, as I feel very lucky to have gone through and have the support and the care and the research that I had to get through the journey of breast cancer,” said Shelley Weimer.

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Thanks to medical advancements, mortality rates have been down 47 per cent since the late 1980s.

“Everybody has fears and you don’t know what’s ahead of you. It’s mind boggling, but once you get through, you build strength and it’s unbelievable. You want to give back and help others get through the same journey,” said Weimer.
