Calgary area slammed by storm

The severe thunderstorm warning for Calgary has ended leaving a path of downed trees and debris across the city.

A severe thunderstorm warning still exists for the Okotoks, Claresholm, High River, Brooks, Strathmore and Vulcan areas.

The storm produced large hail, strong winds and heavy rainfall in many of these areas.

Some windows were blown out of buildings in the downtown core and trees were uprooted in several neighbourhoods.

The storm created a few tense moments for a pair of window washers who were trapped outside on the 21st floor of a building. Witnesses say the workers were banging on the glass for several minutes. Eventually the window was broken and the washers scampered inside to safety.

Lights were also knocked out at several intersections and police are directing traffic.

The Calgary International Airport says operations there have been affected by the storm and that departures, arrivals and baggage delivery may be affected.

Travellers are encouraged to check the airport website for the latest flight information.

Enmax says there are multiple power outages across the city. Downed trees, wind and lightning have affected some transformers and extra crews have been called in to handle the outages.

Power is also out in parts of Airdrie and crews hope to have electricity restored later in the day.

The Calgary Fire Department was flooded with calls and says it received over 130 calls during the storm.

Fire crews were stretched thin as they responded to power outages and downed power lines all over the city.

No injuries or fires were reported.
