Brooks RCMP are warning Albertans about fraudulent text messages claiming provincial health cards are no longer valid and must be replaced through an online application. Police say the messages appear to come from government agencies and instruct recipients to transition to a so-called “Electronic Health Identification System.” Investigators say the texts include a link directing individuals to submit personal information. According to RCMP, scammers often use urgent language and official-looking messages to pressure victims into acting quickly, with the goal of using the information for identity theft and other fraudulent activity. Police say government agencies do not send unsolicited text messages requesting personal, financial or health information through links. Mounties are advising people not to click on links or open attachments, and not to provide personal, banking or health information. Anyone who may have shared personal or financial information is asked to contact their financial institution and report the incident to police.
