Parks Canada says a trail where two people died and 13 others were injured in a rockslide in June will stay closed until at least 2026. On June 20, Jutta Hinrichs, 70, and Hamza Benhilal, 33, were killed when a massive piece of rock broke off the cliffside at the Bow Glacier Falls trail and crashed to the ground. Several groups of hikers were in the area when the rock fell. Crews spent two days searching the rubble for survivors and assisting the injured. Parks Canada says since the rockslide, staff have been assessing geotechnical data collected at the site, which remains closed to the public until further notice. In an update this week, officials say that closure will remain in place until final reports have been submitted. Anyone who enters the closed may be arrested and fined. They may also be required to appear in court. “Visitor safety is a top priority for Parks Canada. It is also a shared responsibility,” Parks Canada said in a statement. “All visitors to national parks are asked to do their part. Be aware of your surroundings and be prepared for your chosen activities. Obey all closures and warnings for your safety and the safety of first responders who are required to assist in the event an emergency occurs.” Officials say while Bow Glacier Falls is closed, the Bow Lake trail remains open for guests.
