Baby OK after being accidentally locked inside vehicle for 30 minutes in northeast

A mom had a scare Thursday when she accidentally locked her keys and baby inside her vehicle in the northeast.

Fire crews responded at 11:40 a.m. to the parking lot of a Goodwill Store at 2930 32 Ave. N.E., where they discovered a distraught mom with a child under one year old locked inside their vehicle, said Calgary Fire Department public information officer Alex Kwan in an email to CTV Calgary.

The parent said she had accidentally locked her keys inside the vehicle and she couldn’t get inside.

Fire crews tried but couldn’t get any doors open and so they decided to safely break a small rear window to improve access for a specialized tool that allowed them to unlock the vehicle from the inside.

They said the mom estimated the baby had been in the vehicle for around 30 minutes.

Firefighters say the baby was alert throughout the incident and an initial medical assessment showed the baby to have a body temperature of 41 C.

Crews had the baby and mom sit in the back seat of the air-conditioned fire truck and provided them with ice packs while they waited for paramedics to arrive.
