84-year-old man hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after being struck in Medicine Hat crosswalk by pickup truck

Medicine Hat police are investigating a pedestrian collision early Thursday morning that badly injured an 84-year-old man.

Police responded at 7:38 a.m.to the intersection of 13 Avenue S.E. and Southview Drive S.E. for reports of a collision between a pedestrian and a pickup truck.

They believe the man was crossing at a marked crosswalk when he was hit by a truck turning left from southbound 13 Avenue S.E. onto Southview Drive S.E.

The victim was transported to hospital before being airlifted to Calgary for treatment with serious, life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the truck was charged with a single count of failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

He’s scheduled to appear in court on September 25.

Police say heavy fog and poor visibility are being considered factors in the collision.
