$7M worth of cocaine seized at Alberta border crossing

A Calgary man faces charges after he was caught allegedly attempting to smuggle 77 kilograms of cocaine into Canada from the U.S.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said its agents found the shipment of drugs concealed inside a commercial transport truck entering the country at the Coutts, Alta., border crossing on Sept. 25.

Suri Singh Salaria, 28, the driver of the truck, was arrested by the CBSA.

The estimated value of the cocaine is approximately $7 million, officials said.

Salaria is charged with importation of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and attempting to export goods that are prohibited, controlled or regulated.

Authorities say the seizure emphasizes the importance of a secure border.

“This investigation highlights the strength of our collaborative efforts through the Integrated Border Enforcement Team,” said Acting Supt. Jeff Pennoyer with the Calgary Police Service’s criminal operations and intelligence division, one of the agencies involved in the operation.

“By working together with our law enforcement partners, we are able to disrupt the flow of illegal drugs and protect our communities from the violence and harm associated with organized crime.”

Salaria is due in Lethbridge provincial court on Oct. 27.
