These two automakers are recalling tens of thousands of vehicles over airbag issues

Two automakers are recalling thousands of vehicles due to concerns that airbags may not work properly.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) issued an update Wednesday on its recall for certain SUVs due to concerns about side airbags. It said a software issue could increase the risk of injury in a crash, according to the advisory posted on Transport Canada’s website. It first issued the recall on May 21.

“On certain vehicles, a software problem in the occupant restraint controller could cause the door airbag pressure sensor(s) not to work properly,” according to the notice. “As a result, the side airbag(s) may not work properly in a crash.”

The recall affects 21,194 SUVs for the following models:

• 2022-25 Grand Cherokee
• 2023-25 Grand Cherokee L

FCA Canada said it will advise owners in writing to take their vehicles to a dealership to update the occupant restraint controller software.

Owners can call 1-800-465-2001 for more information or visit the Mopar website to see if their vehicle is affected. Mopar is the car parts service division of FCA.

Honda expanded a previous airbag recall due to similar concerns. The latest recall affects 12,371 cars, light trucks, vans, minivans and SUVs, according to the notice posted on Transport Canada’s website. Honda initially issued the recall on May 21 and updated it on Friday.

Certain vehicles have a weight sensor for the front passenger seat that may not have been manufactured properly, according to the automaker. It said the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) warning light would turn on in the instrument panel if the weight sensor fails.

“As a result, the passenger-front airbag and knee airbag could deploy in a crash that doesn’t require them to,” the notice stated.

The company said it will advise owners by mail to take their vehicles to a dealership to replace the passenger-front seat weight sensor.

• Acura MDX 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024
• Acura RDX 2021
• Acura TLX 2018-21
• Honda Accord 2018-22
• Honda Civic 2016-22
• Honda CR-V 2017-22
• Honda HR-V 2019-21
• Honda Insight 2019-21
• Honda Odyssey 2018-25
• Honda Passport 2019-21
• Honda Pilot 2018-21
• Honda Ridgeline 2019-21
