S&P/TSX composite down in late-morning trading, U.S. stock markets trade higher

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down more than 100 points in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the energy sector, while U.S. markets climbed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 131.58 points at 36,702.67.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 227.22 points at 53,796.66. The S&P 500 index was up 30.96 points at 7,761.95, while the Nasdaq composite was up 93.90 points at 26,635.25.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.98 cents US compared with 72.14 cents US on Thursday.

The October crude oil contract was down 53 cents US at US$83.00 per barrel.

The December gold contract was down US$33.80 at US$4,630.20 an ounce.
