York Region welcomes groundbreaking robotic technology for knee replacement surgery

York Region has just introduced a groundbreaking robotic technology for knee replacement surgery. Southlake Health is one of only a dozen hospitals in the province and the first in the region to use this advanced technology.

According to health officials, knee replacement surgery is one of the most common procedures at Southlake, with more than 500 surgeries performed each year.

“It is another way Southlake is delivering leading-edge care, close to home,” stated members of the hospital.

What is it?

Zimmer Biomet’s ROSA Knee System is a robotic surgical assistant that helps personalize total knee replacement surgery.

ROSA, stands for Robotic Surgical Assistant and mixes advanced robotic technology with trusted knee implants to support surgeons during total knee replacement surgery.

“ROSA provides a new level of precision and customization,” said John Randle, MD, Physician Leader, Surgical and Perioperative Services Program, and Chief, Department of Surgery, Southlake Health. “The robot doesn’t perform the surgery; the surgeon is still in control, but it gives us real-time insights that help us make more informed decisions during the operation.”

How does it help?

It helps measure soft tissues and make bone cuts, helping surgeons accurately position the knee implant, ultimately creating a smoother recovery.

“This marks the beginning of our robotic journey at Southlake. By giving our surgeons additional tools to provide highly personalized care, we’re advancing surgical services for patients and setting the stage for future innovations,” said Puneet Colvin, Director, Surgical and Perioperative Services, Southlake Health.

And to top it all off: Members of the Newmarket hospital say Southlake’s surgeons are already highly experienced in using the advanced techniques that ROSA supports.
