While thrifting is a trendy activity and a fun pastime for many, one local woman views it as a powerful symbol of how things can be reimagined.

Jessica Ferreira from Barrie is the owner of Silverware Treasures, heirloom jewelry reimagined. Self-taught, Ferreira creates and sells handcrafted jewelry from authentic vintage and antique silverware and personalizes the pieces with custom laser engraving.

Ferreira has not been spared from significant hardships in her life, but turning a passion that’s been passed down from her grandmother into a way of life has helped her to process her pain.

“Thrifting has always been a really important part of my life,” said Ferreira. “My late grandma – she was my best friend. She got me started in it.”

Ferreira started to symbolically see herself in items that were thrown away, tarnished or left on shelves, unwanted. But those were the pieces she found to be the most intriguing and rich in stories and history.

In 2024, Ferreira experienced a pregnancy loss and a cancer diagnosis.

“I have been battling Stage 4 endometriosis,” said Ferreira. “It is all over my body. It’s in my brain, my lungs, my pelvic area, my colon – everywhere. And I also am going through a cancer journey so this has been really great to get out of my head and help me just think about something else.”

While polishing the tarnish and transforming something old into something new, she found the process therapeutic.

Ferreira strived to reimagine each necklace and ring, something that became a symbol of survival for her.

While the future is unclear, one thing is for certain: Ferreira believes there can always be beauty found in what remains.
