Dangerously cold conditions swept across Central Ontario early Friday morning, with wind chills dropping as low as -38 degrees Celsius, creating a serious risk of frostbite. Environment Canada issued multiple yellow cold warnings, stressing that even a brief time outdoors could be dangerous. The warnings, issued shortly after 4 a.m., cover a swath of the region including Barrie, Collingwood, Innisfil, Newmarket, Orangeville, Owen Sound, Orillia, Midland, Huntsville, Bracebridge, Parry Sound, and surrounding communities. According to Environment Canada, wind chills ranging from -30 C to -35 C are affecting southern and central areas, while -33C to -38C are being reported across Muskoka and Parry Sound regions. Health and safety officials warn that frostbite can develop within minutes, especially with wind exposure. “If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside,” states the national weather agency. “Watch for colour changes on fingers and toes, pain, numbness, a tingling sensation, or swelling,” meteorologists say. Weather experts say anyone experiencing symptoms should move indoors immediately and begin warming. Drivers should be prepared for extreme cold-related vehicle issues, including dead batteries and mechanical failures.
