“This is every police and family member’s worst nightmare.” Dufferin County OPP officer killed while on duty

Prov. Const. Tarun Bali of Dufferin detachment was on deployment with the James Bay when he died.

A Dufferin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was killed in the line of duty today.

OPP Const. Tarun Bali of the Dufferin County detachment in Central Region died while working with the James Bay Detachment in the North East Region.

“His courage and commitment to serving others will never be forgotten. As we grieve this immeasurable loss, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, colleagues and the policing community,” said OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique Tuesday afternoon.

Police say James Bay OPP were conducting an investigation at Kendall Concession Road 7 and Concession Road 6 near Hearst around 2:30 p.m.

Few details have released at this time.

However, it was noted that Bali had been a member of the Dufferin detachment for only two and a half years.

An OPP press release says an officer was seriously injured and has since been pronounced dead. A person is currently in custody.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

“This is another reminder of the dangers that our members face each and every day as they serve and protect the citizens of Ontario.
