Temporary traffic lights coming to dangerous Big Bay Point intersection

Innisfil is installing a temporary traffic signal at Big Bay Point Road and 20th Sideroad ahead of a major reconstruction project.

A dangerous intersection, known for crashes, is set for a change, with a temporary traffic signal being installed at Big Bay Point Road and 20th Sideroad ahead of planned reconstruction work.

According to the Town of Innisfil, the signal heads are already up and covered; however, the lights are not operational right now.

“Covered signal heads are up, but some construction and electrical work is needed before the lights can be activated. We’re working with the contractor to complete this as soon as possible,” the town said in a notice.

Until everything is running, the intersection will continue to operate normally. “Until the signals are active, the intersection will continue to operate as a two-way stop. Please follow posted signage, stay alert, and drive with care.”

The town took action amid pressure from residents who said the intersection, which has become increasingly busy with population growth, has been a bad accident zone for years.

South Simcoe Police previously confirmed to CTV News steady increases in crashes at the intersection, with four in 2023, 11 in 2024 and seven as of July.

Officials said installation of permanent traffic lights would follow the temporary ones, along with an eventual redevelopment of the intersection, a project estimated at $200,000.

Municipal officials stated that the future reconstruction project is expected to bring many changes to the corridor. Plans include upgrading the intersection to a permanent design featuring turning lanes, widening and a fully built traffic signal.

“Corridor-wide improvements will also include traffic-calming measures, a new multi-use path, and other roadway enhancements,” said the town.

The full redevelopment is projected to reach completion by 2028, according to the town.

For now, drivers should expect the intersection to function as per usual, with the temporary lights expected to come once construction and electrical work are complete.
