Southbound train collides with empty snowmobile lodged on tracks

A snowmobile was struck by a southbound train Thursday afternoon near Port Stanton Parkway after the unoccupied vehicle became stuck on the tracks, according to Severn Fire officials.

Severn Fire and Emergency Services were dispatched to the area around 1:04 p.m. following reports of a crash between a train and an empty snowmobile at the railway crossing.

Fire Chief Ritch Lowell told CTV News initial information indicated the snowmobile operator was able to jump clear before the train hit the motor vehicle.

Police and Rama Paramedic Services also responded to the afternoon call. Paramedics assessed the rider who appeared to have only minor injuries.

The train involved in the incident was stopped in its tracks.

Emergency responders believe the crash took place when one of the snowmobile’s skis became lodged in the tracks while attempting to cross. Police say the rider was able to get off the machine before any impact.

Canadian National Railway (CN Rail) says incidents like this are preventable and is reminding the public to stay off railway tracks.

“Trains can go as fast as 160 kilometres an hour and can take up to two kilometres to come to a complete stop. That’s the length of 18 football fields,” says CN Rail in a general safety reminder to CTV News.

CN Rail also notes trains can overhang the tracks by up to one metre on each side. They can also carry loads that are wider than the rail cars themselves.

“Railway yards, tunnels and bridges are all private property. If you’re caught trespassing, you could be fined up to $50,000. But it isn’t just illegal to trespass on railway property—it’s extremely dangerous," sates CN Rail.
