BC Ferries has cancelled sailings on several routes—including a major one between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island—as Environment and Climate Change Canada warns of high winds expected Saturday evening. The 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. sailings between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay terminals, in both directions, have been cancelled, BC Ferries said in a statement Saturday afternoon. “The final scheduled sailings this evening will be the 5:00 pm departures from Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay,” the statement reads. Four other sailings—scheduled for Sunday at 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. in each direction—are also at risk of cancellation due to the inclement weather. The cancellations come as the province is in the midst of a series of storms that’s expected to last into the middle of next week. BC Ferries cancelled dozens of trips between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland Friday, as wind and rain knocked out power to tens of thousands. Other ferry routes affected by cancellations—or at risk of cancellation—on Saturday included: Customers who have bookings on cancelled sailings will be contacted directly by BC Ferries’ customer service centre and will receive refunds, the company said.
