Leaders from Simcoe County’s Persian community took part in a large peaceful rally in Richmond Hill Saturday afternoon to show solidarity for the people of Iran. It was scheduled before the joint U.S.-Israel attack against the Islamic Republic of Iran took place, but Saturday’s events made the rally that much more impactful. “The atmosphere throughout the march was highly emotional yet peaceful and organized,” said Samira Rashidian-Zadeh, founder and president of the Barrie Persian Association (BPA). “There were moments of joy, but also deep reflection and remembrance.” Early Saturday morning, the U.S. and Israel launched a major attack against the Middle Eastern country’s regime, sending missiles into Iran overnight targeting military and governmental sites. As Saturday afternoon continued, Rashidian-Zadeh and other marchers heard the reports that Ali Khamenei, the regime’s supreme leader, was confirmed dead. “From my personal observation, many participants reacted with visible happiness and relief,” added Rashidian-Zadeh. “For them, this moment represented what they believe could mark the end of an era defined by decades of repression, executions, and systemic human rights violations.” In photos sent to CTV News by Rashidian-Zadeh, Persian community members are shown waving the Lion and Sun Iranian flag and pictures of Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi. Other photos show community members waving Israeli, American and Canadian flags, and leaving flowers on York Regional Police vehicles. “This gathering was not about promoting violence — it was about expressing hope that Iran may now have an opportunity to move toward meaningful change,” emphasized Rashidian-Zadeh. “Throughout the march, I observed numerous posters honoring the beautiful souls who were killed last month during the brutal crackdown by the Islamic regime. Their images were carried with dignity and solemnity, reminding everyone present of the profound human cost in the struggle for freedom.” Several York Region dignitaries addressed the crowd at the end of the march. They included Melissa Lantsman, Conservative Party Deputy Leader and Thornhill MP, Richmond Hill Mayor David West, Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca, MP’s Ali Ehsassi and Vincent Ho and MPP Michael Parsa. John Brassard, Barrie South–Innisfil MP, echoed his support for the people of Iran in a social media post. “Canada’s Conservatives have always stood with the people of Iran for the tyrannical murderous terrorist regime to be overthrown,” said Brassard. “That day has come! Pray for their safety and the safety of those bringing freedom back to Iran.” U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran continued for a second day on Sunday after the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran retaliated by firing missiles and drones at Israel and at U.S. military installations around the Gulf, and also at Riyadh, Saudi capital, and the global business hub of Dubai.
