Provincial budget delivers major investments in Simcoe-Muskoka

Simcoe County reaps rewards in Ontario budget, as Orillia hospital gets funding for a retrofit

Ontario’s latest provincial budget, tabled Thursday at Queen’s Park, includes a slate of funding commitments directly impacting communities across Simcoe County and Muskoka, with investments aimed a health care infrastructure, policing, economic development, and transportation.

Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy introduced the $232.5 billion budget with a focus on fortifying Ontario’s economy against external pressures, particularly from the United States. While the budget paints a broad fiscal picture for the province, it also outlines specific local allocations that could bring long-term benefits to central Ontario.

Health Care

Among the most notable announcements is the $3 million earmarked for planning the redevelopment of Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH). The funding will help OSMH move forward with detailed designs and service planning for a modern facility that includes more beds, increased ICU capacity, and enhanced services for women and children. Officials say the current hospital is aging and no longer meets the needs of the community.

In a news release, OSMH officials called the grant the first step of a long journey.

“This is an incredible milestone in building a new, modern hospital for the people of Orillia and surrounding areas. We are grateful that the Government of Ontario included a planning grant for Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital in this year’s budget,” said Carmine Stumpo, the hospital’s president and CEO.

Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre will receive $15 million to continue planning its much-anticipated south campus in Innisfil, a project that will be a major step forward in expanding access to care for residents in South Simcoe, especially those facing longer travel times to Barrie.

Policing

Public safety was also a key focus in the budget, with $1 billion committed to a new Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) academy in the Sunshine City.

The province also confirmed upcoming expansions and renovations at the Ontario Police College in Aylmer.

Economy

Cottage country saw a budgetary win as well, with the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) set to receive $30 million in new funding over three years.

The budget expands eligibility for NOHFC programs to include the District of Muskoka, opening doors to new economic development initiatives in the region.

Transportation

The Ford government emphasized it would enhance practices to build highways quicker, including plans to award the contract to design the 10th Sideroad detour for the Bradford Bypass western section and other contracts to build the remaining sections in the central and eastern sections.
