Police say ‘seconds matter’ when reporting missing person

Barrie Police say there should be no 24 hour waiting period, when to comes to reporting a missing person.

In a statement put out by the police department, the organization says if you are concerned for someone’s safety or well being and their absence is out of character, you should contact authorities immediately, rather than waiting day.

The say the matter is extra sensitive if it involves children or vulnerable adults.

Even if the person is an adult who is not dependant on others, an unusual absence should be reported police say, as all missing persons reports will be investigated.

“The goal is always to confirm the person’s well-being,” said Barrie Police.

Being prepared

When reporting a missing person, details are crucial. Police will ask for a last known location, what the person was wearing, their routines and known associates. Medical health and mental health history, or any other safety concerns are also valuable information to share with officers.

Posting on social media

Police say they will use social media as a tool in their investigation “when appropriate.” Residents are asked to keep updated, unfiltered photographs of loved ones handy, to supply to police should there be a need.

Every case is assessed individually, according to Barrie Police. As circumstances requires, police may check places like hospitals or shelters and reach out to family, friends employers or schools. If surveillance footage is an option, law enforcement say they may review it as well as conduct area searches and involve additional police units or partner agencies for help.

“Most missing persons are located safe and well, often within a short period of time,” Barrie police say.

“However, every report is treated seriously and officers continue working until the person is located or their well-being is confirmed,” the police agency adds “police would rather assess the situation early than be notified too late.”
