Police ask residents to stay alert following black bear sighting

Provincial police are alerting the public after a black bear was spotted in the Minden area. The wild animal was reported between Bobcaygeon Road and the Home Hardware parking lot.

Haliburton officers are asking people nearby to keep their distance and avoid approaching or feeding the bear.

Residents are also encouraged by police to secure garbage, recycling and other food that may attract it. Police say pet owners should keep their animals leashed and supervised closely during this time.

Anyone who encounters the bear and believes it poses an immediate threat is asked to call police. Non-emergency sightings can be reported to the Ministry of Natural Resources’ Bear Wise line at 1-866-514-2327.
