The Orillia Recreation Centre was closed suddenly on Tuesday afternoon following an incident that left the building damaged and one man facing charges. According to provincial police, officers were called to the facility located on West Street South between James and Queen streets around 4 p.m. to investigate reports of mischief and property damage. Police say a 38-year-old man from Oro-Medonte smashed windows at the building. The extent of damage has yet to be disclosed. Police say the man sustained injuries to his hands, and was taken to the local hospital for treatment. He faces charges of mischief over $5,000 and failing to comply with a probation order. It’s unclear what sparked the incident. In an email to CTV News, the City confirmed the incident caused the temporary closure of the facility. “The situation involved an individual in crisis and emergency services responded to ensure the safety of all involved.” Due to the situation, all drop-in programming and facility rentals were cancelled for the day on Tuesday. The rec centre has since resumed regular operating hours.
