A bear euthanized last month following the deaths of two people in the McTavish Lake area, was the animal involved in the attack. In an update provided Monday, Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Community Safety announced a necropsy was completed – which confirmed the euthanized bear was the animal involved in the pair of deaths on July 15. “The Ministry of Community Safety extends its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy,” the update read. “No further updates will be provided.” The province first confirmed the fatal incident on July 17, describing it as a wildlife incident that left two people dead in the McTavish Lake area. At that point conservation officers had found and euthanized the bear. The animal’s body was transported to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, where the necropsy was performed. McTavish Lake is located northwest of La Ronge. The deaths at McTavish Lake marked the second fatal bear-related incident in the province this year. In May, a 27-year-old man was killed in a bear attack at a uranium exploration site in the Athabasca Basin near Saskatchewan’s border with the Northwest Territories.
